One night, the Moon looked down at herself and gasped. "Oh dear! A little piece of my glow is missing!" The next night, even more was gone. Soon she was just a thin, silver smile in the sky. "I'm disappearing!" she cried. The stars twinkled with worry. But far away, the Sun heard her and sent a warm message across the sky. "Dear Moon, you have never had a glow of your own. The light you shine is my light, bouncing off you like a mirror." "Then why am I shrinking?" asked the Moon. "You're not shrinking," said the Sun kindly. "As you travel around the Earth, the people below can only see the part of you that I am shining on. Sometimes they see all of you, round and bright. Sometimes they see just a little sliver. But you are always whole." The Moon felt calm again. Night by night, her glow came back, a little bigger each time, until she was full and round and shining. The children on Earth pointed up and smiled. "Look! A full moon!" And the Moon smiled back, knowing she was always there, even when she couldn't be seen.
