High in an old oak tree lived a little owl named Pip. Every night, Pip looked up at the sky and tried to count the stars. One, two, three, four... but the stars twinkled and winked, and Pip always lost her place. "There are too many!" she hooted. Grandma Owl fluttered down beside her. "Let's try a trick," she said. "Count them in groups of five, like the fingers on one wing." Pip pointed at a little cluster. "One, two, three, four, five. That's one group!" Then she found another. "Five more! That makes ten!" She counted another group, and another. "Fifteen! Twenty! Twenty-five!" Pip's eyes grew wide and round. Counting in groups was so much faster. Soon Pip had counted fifty stars, and she didn't lose her place even once. "Grandma," she whispered, "I think the sky has more stars than I can ever count." Grandma Owl smiled. "That's the most wonderful thing about the sky, little one. There is always something more to discover." And Pip snuggled into her feathers, counting softly, five, ten, fifteen, until she fell fast asleep.
